Krystal Porter - Early Reading Interventionist
Hello fabulous 1st grade families!
My name is Mrs. Porter and I am the Early Reading Interventionist at Startzville Elementary.
I began my teaching career in Somerset ISD while earning my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from UTSA (Go Runners!). I quickly made my way to Comal county, where I have spent the past 7 years in the New Braunfels and Comal area. In my 11 years of public education, I have taught 1st, 4th and 5th grade while always holding a passion for reading and writing and a belief that early intervention is key!
What is Early Reading Intervention?
Our brains are hard-wired to master spoken language, but learning to read is another story. Learning to read is a very complex skill — one of the most complex things that we ask our children to take on. And for many kids, it doesn’t come easily. There are many reasons reading can be hard. As an Early Reading Interventionist, I work alongside teachers to collect and review data that helps us to understand what areas a child might be struggling in. It's important to note that struggling readers will often have problems in multiple areas. Being at risk does not mean that the child is doomed to be a poor reader, but it does indicate that he or she may need especially close monitoring and prompt intervention to prevent reading difficulties. Early Reading Intervention targets skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, letter and word recognition, fluency and much more.
Why is my child receiving extra reading help?
Students are recommended for extra reading support (30 minutes a day) based on classroom teacher input, diagnostic reading assessments, and our mClass & MAP district screeners.
What are some skills I can practice on at home with my child to support learning at school?

Will my child work with you all year?
The answer depends on your child’s growth! If students are making incredible growth, they may not need extra interventions all year. Groups are flexible, based on grade level data and change every few weeks. Myself and your child’s teacher will closely monitor your child’s progress and discuss best fit interventions to aid in their success as they learn to read!
