Comal ISD Board of Trustees Approves School Name, Dr. Jerry S. Major Middle School

March 26, 2026 - This evening, the Comal ISD Board of Trustees approved the naming of the district’s newest middle school to be Dr. Jerry S. Major Middle School.

The campus, which has been referred to as Middle School No. 9, is part of the bond approved by voters in May 2023. Scheduled to open in the fall of 2027 in the Mayfair subdivision, Major Middle School is under construction.

A former superintendent of schools for Comal ISD from 1993 to 2000, Major is well known not only in Texas public education where he spent 35 years as a teacher, coach and administrator, but also in New Braunfels and the hill country where he served on numerous committees and as the CEO of the McKenna Foundation, and where he chose to retire.

“Jerry Major is a class act,” wrote one of his nominators, Smithson Valley High School Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach Larry Hill. “His character, mannerisms and demeanor are second to none. His name on a Comal ISD school building would exemplify exactly what Comal ISD stands for.”

Born in San Marcos, Major earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southwest Texas State University and his doctorate degree from the University of Texas Cooperative Superintendency Program. He served at several Texas school districts including New Braunfels ISD, Livingston ISD and Waco ISD, and after retirement, he served as a liaison for the Region 13 Education Service Center.

“We are pleased to honor the tradition of excellence that Dr. Major helped establish during his time as superintendent and through his continued service in the community,” says Comal ISD Board President Courtney Biasatti. “His legacy of kindness, commitment to education, and putting kids first, will be remembered for generations to come.”

The process of identifying a name for the new campus began in July with a request for nominations sent to Comal ISD families. A School Naming Committee was established, consisting of representatives from the school’s community. The committee met three times to review and discuss the names for consideration and determine which name to recommend to the administration.

The district’s board policy establishes the criteria that a name must meet to be considered for a Comal ISD campus or facility. Elementary, middle and high schools may be named to honor educators with outstanding service to the district; a location including a local residential or geographic area or a local, state or national landmark; or after former schools that are historically significant to the development of the district.
