Results from Fall Chess Tournaments

November 15, 2023 - The chess tradition at Comal ISD continues with two of four tournaments completed. The first occurred October 21 at Pieper High School with the host team taking the top prize, and the second was November 4 at Davenport High School with Canyon Lake High School taking the championship in a tie breaking match.

The remaining tournaments are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3, at Canyon Lake High School and Saturday, April 20, at Smithson Valley High School. A rated secondary tournament called “The Endgame” is scheduled for Saturday, May 11, at Canyon High School. For registration information and to learn more about Comal ISD Chess, click here.

Kinder-2nd Grade Category – Top Team
  • Oak Creek Elementary, coached by Sheila Pfeffer. This marks the 5th consecutive team win by OCES in this division.

Kinder-2nd Grade Category – Individual

  • 1st place - James Williams, 2nd grade, Indian Springs Elementary
  • 2nd place - Dash Johnson, 2nd grade, Oak Creek Elementary
  • 3rd place - Brantley Sims, 2nd grade, Arlon Seay Elementary

  • Canyon Middle School, coached by Clinton Cowan. Won for the first time.

  • 1st place – Asher Lippe, 7th grade, CMS

  • Canyon Lake High School by a tie breaking match between Jacob Ybarra of Pieper High School and Erick Ortiz of CLHS. The winning CLHS is coached by Ben Ceyanes and Charles Van Houten.

High School Category – Individual

  • 1st place – Jacob Ybarra, 9th grade, PHS
  • 2nd place – Jeremy Herrera, 10th grade, Canyon High School
  • 3rd place – Diego Fuentes, 11th grade, CLHS

-The top team for the middle school category on Oct. 21 was Canyon Middle School.
